My three year old brother is in daycare and yesterday, the daycare gave everybody “Indian names” and construction paper feather headbands and paper bag vests with their “Indian name” on it. My brother’s was Smoke God. The whole daycare and all of the parents thought it was the cutest thing ever. Even my mother, who has a higher blood quantum than me, thought it was cute and sent pictures of him dressed like that to some of my brother’s dad’s side of the family(they’re all white). She’s even saving the headband as a memento. When I pointed out that it was racist, she got mad at me for pointing it out. Why should pointing out that something is wrong be something to get mad over? My brother is only three years old and he’s already been exposed to racist stereotypes of HIS RACE. The whole holiday of Thanksgiving is a lie. It’s a lie that everyone was happy and the white settlers and the indigenous people sat down and had dinner and got along for all of time. We learn this starting from when we are little kids. It’s just a cover up for what really happened, which, was genocide. Over 60,000 indigenous people of this nation were SLAUGHTERED because we weren’t people in the eyes of the “Settlers.” We were something that you had to get rid of in order to live here. We were a roadblock. To this day, we are still treated like second class citizens on OUR OWN LAND! There is still the fear that causes you to want to mark “White” on papers that ask your race. There is still that fear that forces you to stay away from the culture of your people. These fears stem from the racism that our people have faced since the 1400s. Yet, for some reason, we are supposed to be thankful that it happened. We are supposed to laugh when people paint their skin red and do a “battle cry” or wear headdresses or say that their “Indian name” is Runs With Beer and we are supposed to think that it’s cute when three year olds run around saying their Indians and wearing construction paper feather headbands and we are supposed to think it’s “hot” when people dress as Sexy Pocahontas and, god forbid, we say something that points the finger at the actual people the finger needs to be pointed at! We are supposed to sit back and let this holiday of lies slip right past and let America keep skipping the portion of history that points out white people were WRONG! Well, I’ll tell you something. I’m not going to sit back and watch this happen anymore!
